Riddle me this, Riddle me that, who's afraid of the Big Black Bat..

Hot off the press we have confirmation from Warner Bros. that the awesome Batman Begins will be hitting Blu-ray on the 8th July(in the U.S, UK dates to stil be confirmed). Being as this titles distributed by Warner Bros it means that it's also going to be Region Free for import. I probably would'nt buy it normally since I've already got it amongst a very small gathering of HD-DVD's in my collection. However, and here's the good bit.. Warner have chosen to produce not only a bog standard single Disk edition but also a Limited edition that contains the following:

    To quote Blu-ray.com

"Both the single disc and gift set editions will include an exclusive comic book prologue to the upcoming sequel 'The Dark Knight', which is set to hit theaters July 18th. The box set will also include a Batman Begins motion art lenticular, script pages, exclusive photos, storyboards, five collectible Batman Begins postcards, and $7.50 in movie cash toward a Dark Knight ticket."

Now, I'm aware that I won't be able to use the "movie cash" but the rest should look pretty great. Loved the movie a lot so am looking forward to seeing this once more details are released on it. I'll keep you posted..

    Not so Secret anymore..

National Treasure : Book of Secrets has been given a U.K release date of 09/06/2008 on Blu-ray.

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets is the follow up to the box-office hit National Treasure and features Nicholas Cage as Ben Gates - the treasure hunter who, once again, sets out on an exhilarating, action-packed new global quest to unearth hidden history and treasures!

When a missing page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth surfaces, Ben's great-great grandfather is suddenly implicated as a key conspirator in Abraham Lincoln's death. Determined to prove his ancestor's innocence, Ben follows an international chain of clues that takes him on a chase from Paris to London and ultimately back to America. This journey leads Ben and his crew not only to surprising revelations - but to the trail of the world's most treasured secrets.

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets - Trailer 2

Basically.. more of the same, but since I was a fan of the first movie then thats not a problem for me. Like the ol' saying goes.. "don't fix what ain't broke!"

Zodiac Blu-ray release date now 04/09/08

Following on from yesterdays post I've just received an email from Amazon that Zodiac on Blu-ray has now been re-arranged for release between the 2nd and 4th September. Originally slated for release earlier in April I guess it's a case of better late than never..

    "Dear Customer,

We wanted to give you an update on the status of your order #*********
Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we
need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date:

Elias Koteas (Actor), et al "Zodiac - Director's Cut [Blu-ray]
    [2007]" [Blu-ray]
    Estimated arrival date: 02/09/08 - 04/09/08

We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes."

It's a release I've been looking forward to getting for a while now, I know it's quite a long film and a lot of people went to see this at the cinema were slighty annoyed because this was marketed as almost a follow-up to the film Seven,(great film y the way.. if you have'nt seen it then I really recommend you giving it a go) and went into the cinema to find a completely different kind of film from what they expected to see.

    Roll on September!

No Country For Old Men pre-order

No Country For Old Men has probably already stamped itself in cinematic history as a 'Modern Classic' and it's no surprise that it's managed to walk away from the Oscars with more than it's fair share of awards taking Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Supporting Actor and Writing Award(screenplay).

With a DVD and Blu-ray release in the UK still un-announced but due for release sometime later this year I'm happy to report that the U.S release of No Country For Old Men on Blu-ray, due out for release on 11th March is Region Free. Great news and my pre-orders just gone in, I can't wait to get this in my collection. Not a bad price either, I used a £1.00 discount voucher I recieved from Movietyme and paid just £14.99 delivered for it(no import tax to pay).

    We've struck Oil..!

There's the first glimpse of the fantastic film "There Will Be Blood" being made available for release on Blu-ray. Being made by Paramount Vantage this film would of up till recently been a HD-DVD exclusive film. However, it's now being reported that the film along with a host of others due for HD-DVD release have now been pulled from official press sites etc and now the official Blog run by jointly by Fox, Disney and Sony have posted an official trailer showing "There will be Blood" coming to Blu-ray. Hopefully this is'nt just a site jumping the gun and is confirmed behind the scenes and just needs an announcement..

UK retailers report Surge in Blu-ray HD player Sales

In a recent interview two of the UK's premier retailers, Dixons and Play.com respectively have commented on the major increase in Blu-ray sales since the format war has ended.

DeVere Forster, managing director at Dixons, commented, "This is good news for consumers as the availability of a single format will allow consumers to purchase the high definition Blu-ray format DVD player with every confidence and enjoy all the benefits that this fantastic format has to offer".  Whilst Stuart Rowe, Chief Operating Officer at Play.com remarked, "People have been waiting a long time to move into the Hi-Def era and now they have the confidence that this is going to be the format. Our cheapest player (The Samsung BD-P1400/XEU) is now £199 and you'd expect the prices to come down further as Sony try and build the brand. It's all great news for the consumer."

Update on studio support for Blu-ray

Right, as I stated in yesterdays post the situation with Paramount had'nt been made official. It's now been cleared up finally, in a press release put out late on Wednesday Paramount have finally announced that they too along with Universal Studios be releasing films(again) upon Blu-ray HD. This basically means that as of now, all six of the Major studios are now releasing on Blu-ray so if you want any of those films you've been craving then sure enough you'll get to see them in Blu-ray HD.

    Press release as follows:

"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the statement read. "As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

    Death of HD-DVD, Blu-ray now Industry's Focus

I've kept pretty quiet on all the comings and goings that have recently happened in the format war over in the US because although they do ultimately affect us in the UK the direct impact for most of us are in the UK stores and what they are doing. Well now I can confirm that the Dixons Group has now dropped support of HD-DVD and will be focusing it's efforts on the promotion of Blu-ray as the new standard in Hi-Definition DVD.

    Quote from HDTV UK:

"Dixons Online has claimed an immediate 150% increase in consumer interest for the Blu-ray high definition disc format after yesterday's announcement from Toshiba. In response, Dixons has withdrawn all models of HD DVD players from its online store.

Managing Director at Dixons, deVere Forster, comments: “This is good news for consumers as the availability of a single format will allow consumers to purchase the High Definition Blu-Ray format DVD player with every confidence and enjoy all the benefits that this fantastic format has to offer. Now that the winning format is clear, Dixons.co.uk’s aim is to have the UK’s widest selection of Blu Ray players available for customers soon.”"

The Dixons group(Actually called "DSG international") consists of Dixons, Currys, Currys.Digital and PC World. Basically this announcement means for certain that the UK Electrical outlets have indeed heeded the latest news in the US and make a decision to go Blu-ray exclusive. Good news for most consumers, the confusion over HD Disks for the mainstream was a fiasco for everyday folk. I personally know more than a few people that had picked up HD-DVD players over the last year that were under the illusion that they'd picked the player that had the industry behind it and would "win out" in the long run. Now thats not going to happen and the way forward is clear for consumers to buy in confidence the new DVD standard that's going to invade all our homes over the next few years.

As a summary as to whats happened over the last week or so in the U.S for those that don't know, NetFlix announced that it would be phasing out support for HD-DVD and concentrating it's efforts on Blu-ray. This move in itself was a blow to the remaining movie studios left supporting HD-DVD, with Blockbuster Rental already Blu-ray exclusive it mean't that the two major DVD rental companies in the U.S would'nt be stocking HD-DVD - a major loss of revenue to the studios.

On the very same day Best Buy(the U.S alter-ego to Dixons over here) also made an announcement that it would be recommending to it's customers Blu-ray over HD-DVD in future as the format to buy. With the American Electrical chain firmly backing Blu-ray the knock on effect was huge. Within a few days Wal-Mart - the world's biggest consumer sales company(Think Tesco's) released a statement that it was dropping HD-DVD, a MAJOR blow to Toshiba. Whilst Wal-Mart is technically a food store chain, in the same way as Tesco's have over the last few years it's expanded it's product range to encompass among other things electrical goods and with the huge number of people using the stores it has quickly become a huge seller of electronics to America.

Finally today, Amazon.com have added they're name to those companies endorsing Blu-ray over HD-DVD on they're sites. With all this happening in such a short space of time the shock and awe effect has forced Toshiba to come out with a major press conference announcing that as from end of March it would be giving up on HD-DVD. As the formats main backer of the technology this basically leaves HD-DVD without any major support within the industry.. and the fallout from it has already brought Universal Studio's, the formats long time exclusive backer to announce that it wil begin releasing it's films in Hi-Def Blu-ray as soon as it's able to. While we have'nt as yet heard anything from Paramount studios it can only be a matter of time before we do, also the interest in Paramount studio's in the UK is relatively small in itself since the majority of it's films are released by Entertainment in Video.. which already release on Blu-ray.

    UK Releases in February 2008

Each month I'll report on what's due up for release as well as link each title to it's pre-order page on Amazon.co.uk(bare in mind that this isn't always the cheapest place to get your films so look around before buying!) or Movietyme-if it's a region free title available for import. I will try and state whether a film is already available from the US and region free and provide a link for importing or if it's a film that's known to be region locked and unplayable on a UK machine I'll try and state that as well where the informations to hand.
